The Roses lighthouse, built in 1864 under Queen Isabella II, rises proudly over the sea below the Trinity Castle.

The history of the lighthouse dates back to the medieval period. At that time, Roses had a lighthouse in the form of a tower situated at the point where the remains of the Trinitat castle are now found. This lighthouse served to guide coastal shipping and to watch for pirate raids.

In 1544 the Trinitat castle was built, occupying for some 300 years the site of the old lighthouse. The castle was totally destroyed during the wars against the French of 1794-1796 and 1808-1814. From then on, and until the construction of the present-day lighthouse in 1864, a permanent wood fire was lit in the ruins of Trinitat castle to fulfil the basic functions of the lighthouse.

The lighthouse which we know today is a building of two volumes, one of quadrangular plan (324 m2), and the other, the tower, of circular plan with the light at the top, situated in the centre of the building.

The lighthouse of Roses, with its unmistakable white silhouette overlooking the sea, has been and will remain a reference point both for sailors in the bay and for the people of Roses themselves, who have made it a sign of identity of this sailors' town.
